God’s Love Letter
Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
God’s Love Letter
In this technological savvy stage of life, communication in the form of a hand written letter is almost forgotten. There is just something special about receiving a letter or a card from someone who wants to tell you how much they care about you. It is a bit uncomfortable when you get one these days as we may not be used to it.
Romans 1:20 says, “for since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, His eternal power and diving nature, have been clearly seen being understood through what has been made; so they are without excuse.”
The passage from Romans would suggest that we can see God plainly in creation. Isaiah 6:3 says the Seraphim circle the throne of God and say, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.” The problem is that we can’t naturally see God in all that He has made as we are born dead in trespasses and sins – Ephesians 2:1. Sin at it’s very root is not believing in, trusting in, adoring, or cherishing God, Who supplies us with every ounce of life we have. In fact, the Bible says we suppress the truth about God and find our satisfaction in the things that He has made rather than in Him. Our natural tendency is not to adore God and His ways but to hate God and eliminate Him from our lives. The natural course of our lives is, spiritual death, which leads to physical death, and then eternal death.
The amazing thing about this situation is that God set it up this way. It does not take God by surprise. He is not perplexed in what to do. The situation gives God the opportunity to teach us an even deeper aspect about His character that we would not have seen if we were in a perfect relationship with Him. He gets to teach us about His grace by sending us a Letter that explains His desire for us to be His beloved children.
God’s love letter is Jesus Christ. John begins his gospel with, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God – John 1:1.” Jesus is God’s Letter of His compassion, grace, love, forgiveness, truth, and justice towards humanity. When we study and believe in Jesus through what God says in the pages of scripture, we are receiving a personalized letter from the heart of the Father directly to each one of us. Jesus is the Word of God’s desire for you to be His child. In His Letter He spared no expense in declaring His innermost desires in wanting you to be His child.
Colossians 3:15 says to let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. The word of Christ is God being filled with a feeling of deep sorrow over our spiritual deadness, which moves Him to send His Son into the world to defeat sin and death so that we may be reconciled to Him as our loving Abba, Father, Poppa, Daddy. Let this word dwell in you richly and let the truth of Jesus rule over your minds. If you do, then you will be characterized as one who is characterized by making a melody to the Lord in your heart.
